Our Story

Formed in 1999, Scorpius Dance Theatre has been voted BEST CONTEMPORARY DANCE COMPANY & BEST DANCE COLLECTIVE by Phoenix New Times. Scorpius is best known for its highly accessible, full-length, themed productions such as ROCK, Water Dreams, Fantasy…Inspired by Michael Parkes, David+Lisa, CATWALK, and Lisa Starry’s annual signature cult classic, A Vampire Tale. In addition to these well-known works, Scorpius is always creating edgy and inspiring repertory works that further showcase the company’s artistry and entertainment abilities. Celebrating 19 years in the Valley, Scorpius has been a constant presence in the metropolitan Phoenix arts community since its debut, combining the motifs of humor, drama, and both organic and technical movement to form a very distinct brand of dance theater and aerial arts.

Nicole Olson

Assistant Director/Guest Choreographer

Nicole started her training in ballet and classical jazz at Milwaukee Ballet School. After graduating with a BFA in Dance from Univ. of WI- Stevens Point, she continued performing for Kirby Reed (Chicago), Bauer Contemporary Ballet (Milwaukee), and Emergence Dance Theatre (Chicago).

Nicole has performed in Arizona with the Phoenix Opera, Liliana Gomez, Candy Jimenez, Diane McNeal Hunt, Dulce Dance, and Center Dance Ensemble. She has been performing with Scorpius for 16 seasons, touring nationally and internationally with the company.

Ms. Olson has presented her choreography in such venues as the Kennedy Center (DC), TBA Festival/Ten Tiny Dances (Portland, OR) , MixMatch Festival (Los Angeles), Harvest Chicago Contemporary Dance Festival (Chicago), Dance in the Desert Festival (Las Vegas), Sling Dance Project (Austin), Breaking Ground Dance and Film Festival (Tempe), Tiny Works|Tiny Dances (Phoenix), Herberger Theater and Orpheum Theatre (Phoenix). She has received an Arizoni Award in Choreography for Nearly Naked Theatre’s “The Who’s Tommy”. This past season, Nicole choreographed “Evita” (Phoenix Theatre), “Heathers” (Stray Cat Theatre), and “Hair” (Desert Stages Theatre), and has been nominated for an Arizoni award for both “Evita” and “Heathers”.

Along with her choreography and performance work, she is Director of Dance at the Metropolitan Arts Institute in Phoenix, and teaches summer intensives and workshops nationally.

Assistant Director/Aerial Trainer/Guest Aerial Choreographer

Gavin is originally from Belleville Illinois. He began his professional career at the age of 18 for the St Louis MUNY Theatre, America’s largest outdoor amphitheater. He worked with MADCO from 1998-2002 before moving to New York. In New York he worked with several small companies and was then hired as one of six select dancers for the Erick Hawkins Dance Company.  In 2005 a dream came true for Gavin, as he performed classic original works choreographed by Mr. Hawkins, at the Lincoln Center in Manhattan. Gavin returned to MADCO in 2007 as a principle dancer, where he most recently worked with Frank Chaves (River North Dance Co), Robert Battle (artistic director of Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre), and Janice Garrett (Janice Garrett & Dancers). He also served as a teaching artist for the St Louis ArtWorks, a nationally recognized program that uses the arts to provide job training skills for youth in need. Gavin joined Scorpius in 2011.

Lighting Designer

Daniel has designed many productions around the valley working in theatre, Dance and corporate events. His lighting designs have gained him numerous awards and accolades, including over sixty five AriZoni Award nominations as well as being the recipient for 6 AriZoni Theatre Awards of Excellence. Recent design credits include: ONE MAN TWO GUVNOR’S (Phoenix Theatre), HYSTERIA (Southwest Shakespeare Co.), COMPANY (ASU Lyric Opera Theatre), & MURDER BALLAD (A/C Theatre Co.) Daniel has also designed around the country working in New York, California, Las Vegas andNew Mexico; as well as traveling to Whitby, England for a guest design opportunity. Daniel is also the resident Lighting Designer + Master Electrician + Director of Production for Rentals & Special Events at Phoenix Theatre, as well as the Resident Production Stage Manager for Scorpius Dance Theatre, VERVE Dance Co & Conder Dance. He is also the Assistant Production Supervisor for the Herberger Theatre Center. Daniel works in the operating role as Production Manager for Center Dance Ensemble and Southwest Shakespeare Co. as well as acting as an adjunct faculty member teaching Dance Production at Glendale Community College. Daniel is also the Owner + Operator for Davisson Entertainment, LLC a local event and production company who’s mission is to cultivate and expose local art and artists.
