The true allure is arresting imagery and emotional intensity. It's a lot closer to MTV than Tchaikovsky, but the music, movement and staging combine into a spectacle that's genuinely eerie ... and sexy as hell.

Kerry Lengel, The Arizona Republic

’A Vampire Tale’ showcases Starry's exotic, barefooted troupe in moody and occasionally breathtaking scenes that range from aerials on suspended strips of fabric to coffin-side seductions. Mostly, though, the show is a chance for Starry to celebrate certain delicious juxtapositions: sultry sexiness and fun-house menace; dance that's fluid one moment, herky-jerky the next; the earthbound and the airborne; the subtle and the overt.

– Chris Page, Get Out

Lisa Starry’s A Vampire Tale, is tersely touted as “the ‘Nutcracker’ of Halloween” and has become the requisite haunt of the fall season. Voted BEST MODERN DANCE PRODUCTION 2007 by Phoenix New Times.

The story tracks a susceptible, young woman, who emerges, lost and depressed and is lured into the assorted band of bloodsuckers by their shadowy showmanship and seductive transactions. The characters structure an intense spectacle of dark debauchery, which keeps the innocent both fascinated and frightened by their

underworld.

Audiences get all the trimmings…DARK and SEXY drama, QUIRKY and COMEDIC episodes, as well as VISUALLY STUNNING aerial feats.

A Vampire Tale is presented each October at Phoenix Theatre’s Little Theatre (2003 through 2011) and is now received by SOLD OUT audiences. This ever-evolving, original dance production, which audiences make a ritual to revisit each year to observe its juicy developments (A.K.A. “the fresh meat”), comprises a cast of 15 dancers and features the choreography of Scorpius Dance Theatre’s Artistic Director, Lisa Starry.

The company has been recent guests at the Twilight Convention (Phoenix) and toured to New Orleans, LA in October 2009 to perform as part of the International Vampire Film Festival. They will travel to Whitby, England

in October 2011 to perform live at the Bram Stoker International Film Festival.

CATWALK

Staged on a runway, this original contemporary dance production fuses funky, local fashions, sexy athleticism and the distinct choreography of Lisa Starry. Catwalk features 18 different choreographic works that are connected by video montages and fashion runway spoofs.

The different works are set to popular rock, pop, and mix music, plus original creations by local musicians, Adam Smith and Kristopher Hill. Dancers wear costumes and accessories created by local designers and independently owned boutiques. Drawing inspiration from pop culture, Lisa Starry, director of Scorpius Dance Theatre created this all-original, contemporary dance production based on the popularity of today’s fashion scene and fashion television reality shows.

CATWALK is a sexy, fun and sincere celebration of the pure joy of glamour. -- Kerry Lengel, The Arizona Republic

It was just the inspiration and entertainment I needed. -- Audience Member, CATWALK 2010

..the dancing, the fashion, the videos, the music, the spoofs – it was all fantastic!  -- Fashion Phoenix

An unusual love story: david+lisa is an intense fairy-tale of sorts that tells of two people who meet in a mental institution. After a series of events, an unlikely attachment is developed between the volatile individuals. The true lives of David and Lisa have also been the subject of a fact-based, psychoanalytic book, a stage play, and a 1960s film. Scorpius was the first to abstract their story into the realm of contemporary dance, featuring monochromatically themed staging and original music by Ryan Breen and Kristofer Hill.

I truly admire Lisa Starry's artistic vision and her company is professional quality.

– Matt Lehrman, Alliance for Audience

It was a first-rate production. Lisa has carved out her own niche between the audiences of dance and theater.

– Susan M. Skrzycki, Hearsight.com

They never fail to make me laugh, touch me, and leave me feeling better than when I walked in.  – Stacy Van Dyke
